2012 Show

The Earth Science Museum (ESM) launched its Outreach Program and winter fundraising campaign at the 2012 Flagg Gem & Mineral Show.

For the outreach program, a new earth science education kit was released. This kit features rock, mineral, and fossil specimens along with learning materials that specifically support Arizona's science curriculum standards. Teachers can sign up to receive a free kit for their school and a classroom presentation by an ESM volunteer.

The goal of the winter campaign involves raising $5,000 to support the outreach program and other museum development activities. To emphasize this goal, a large 5000 milliliter Erlenmeyer flask (glassware used in a chemistry lab) was used collect donations. The chemistry theme was also echoed in the fundraising slogan - "Help Fill the Flask and Become a Reagent of Change!". In addition, museum volunteers sold a variety of small items that included gemstone bottles, souvenir pencils, Oco geodes, Apache Tears and other tumbled stones, and dinosaur bone slabs.

Overall, the ESM received over $2100 in donations, sales, and memberships, while several volunteers appeared on Channel 10's live TV broadcast from the show. A big note of thanks goes to everyone who helped make the three-day event a great success!!!
